The Palestinian authorities announced Wednesday it has completed the rehabilitation of the sole power plant in the Gaza Strip.
Omar Kittaneh, head of the Palestinian Energy and Natural Resources Authority (ENRA), said in a press statement that Gaza's sole power station has been completely rehabilitated and it's able to produce about 120 to 140 megawatts of electricity.
Israel damaged the sole power station in Gaza in a military operation in 2006 when Hamas militants captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
The 3-million-U.S. dollar rehabilitation project is funded by the Islamic Development Bank as a humanitarian aid for Gazans to alleviate the power crisis, and to lower the electricity deficit to 15 percent, Kittaneh said.
The project to rehabilitate the sole power station in Gaza, sponsored by the United Nations Development Program, lasted for three months, according to Kittaneh.
He added that the power station daily needs half a million liters of industrial diesel.
The Gaza Strip needs an amount of 270 Megawatts of electricity, of which Israel allows only 120.
