ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post by Zack Colman - July 24, 2009 - 12:00am A new poll, conducted during a week of heightened tensions between Israel and the US over settlement construction and stymied diplomatic negotiations, reveals in stark terms just how wary Israeli Jews are regarding the Palestinian leadership, and how distrustful they are about international assurances for the country's long-term security. |

Israeli occupation is a hurdle to peace
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Gulf News by Marwan Kabalan - (Opinion) July 24, 2009 - 12:00am The 1967 Arab-Israeli war was a watershed event in the Middle East. Its repercussions have shaped the history and politics of the region ever since. The war has also transformed the nature of the Arab-Israeli conflict, rendering it from an existential question into mere dispute over territories. During six days of almost one-sided hostilities, Israel captured a huge portion of Arab territories, including the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank of the River Jordan, and the Syrian Golan Heights. The status of these occupied territories has subsequently become the title of the conflict. |

Checkpoints eased: Nablus journeys
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from BBC News July 17, 2009 - 12:00am Israel said they were necessary security measures to prevent attacks on its civilians, but many Palestinians viewed them as collective punishment. The northern city of Nablus, previously a stronghold of Palestinian militant groups, has been surrounded by six checkpoints since the Palestinian uprising, or intifada, which began in 2000. For the first time in about nine years, its residents can now drive their cars out of the city. Journey times around the West Bank have been cut significantly. |

What About "Evil" Itself?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Asharq Alawsat by Hussein Shobokshi - (Opinion) July 15, 2009 - 12:00am Travel and Leisure magazine, one of the most respected in its field, has dedicated a number of pages promoting tourism in Israel. In this advertising campaign the map of Israel was shown as including the West Bank and Gaza, and of course - the Golan Heights. This was not a misprint or inadvertent; it was deliberate and came amidst talks of pressure being put on Israel and its extremist rightwing government to force it to take part in serious peace negotiations, to which the government is absolutely opposed. |

Evading the real issue
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Arab News by Osama Al-Sharif - (Opinion) July 15, 2009 - 12:00am There is a disturbing feeling that we could be heading toward a form of an abrupt closure in the Palestine question in the coming few months. Like a silent and deadly perfect storm the elements are lining up and no one really knows when and how the tempest will strike. We appear to be suspended in a state of political inertia, but on the ground the undercurrents are picking up speed. |

Mideast must seize 'window of opportunity': German FM
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Agence France Presse (AFP) July 7, 2009 - 12:00am German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Middle Eastern leaders on Tuesday to seize the "window of opportunity" that the new US administration has opened in the region. US President Barak Obama's initiative "creates many opportunities that we need to use now," Steinmeier said after meeting Lebanese prime minister designate Saad Hariri in Beirut. "That is why all the partners must take part constructively in this process and make their positions clear quickly before the window of opportunity closes." |

The one-state solution
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Ynetnews by Yigal Sarna - (Opinion) July 2, 2009 - 12:00am One of these days, an American president will tell us: One state. After three more premiership terms, during which Netanyahu will return to power time and again in the wake of resounding failures, President Eduardo S. Gonzales will arrive here from Washington. The son of Cuban immigrants, Gonzales will stand up on top of the Masada, and with Elie Wiesel and China’s president by his side declare his unequivocal support for one state. Yet Bibi, boasting great experience and shaking because of his age, concerns, and anxiety, will insist: Only two states. |

Palestinian peace in our time?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Avi Issacharoff - June 26, 2009 - 12:00am It's been two years since Hamas' takeover of the Gaza Strip, and it seems as if the breach between Gaza and the West Bank - or between what has been dubbed "Fatahland" and "Hamastan" - has never been wider. More than 700 Hamas members are imprisoned in Palestinian Authority jails in the West Bank, whereas several hundred Fatah loyalists are kept in Hamas' detention facilities in Gaza. In June 2007, as Hamas launched its takeover of Gaza, clashes between the two organizations claimed the lives of 158 Palestinians, mostly Fatah members. |
