A textbook debate riddled with tired cliches

That Palestinian school books teach their children to hate Israeli Jews is a cliché as legendarily interminable as the conflict itself. It’s part of a canon that includes the smug regurgitation of the paucity of Arab Nobel prize-winners and the bemoaning of the lack of a Palestinian Peace Now. But the charge that Palestinian textbooks are riddled with incitement has long become an integral part of Israel’s diplomatic strategy, echoed by Western leaders in front of Israel-supporting and Jewish audiences.

What's in a name?

Maybe it was an inside joke. Or perhaps the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, was simply short on sleep when he mangled the name of his Egyptian counterpart - President Mohammed Morsi - and combined it with that of his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak. Either way, the near-blunder was a surreal moment in a country that is just barely dealing with reality.

If any observer had wanted to sum up the situation of the current Egyptian regime, and compare it to the pre-25 January 2011 situation, it would be difficult to find anything better than the “mistake” committed by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president, when he called the current Egyptian president “Mohammed Hosni.”

President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday urged Islamic leaders to end Israel's blockade of Gaza, but criticized official visits to the enclave. The ongoing siege of Gaza will prolong the conflict with Israel and lead the region to another round of violence, preventing a just and comprehensive peace agreement, Abbas said in a speech at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Cairo.

A team of British surgeons has carried out Gaza's first organ transplants as a pilot for a long-term plan to train local medical staff to perform the operations. Two patients underwent kidney transplants at the Shifa, Gaza's biggest public hospital, which is beset by overcrowding, chronic power cuts and shortages of drugs and equipment. The operations were conducted a fortnight ago by a volunteer medical team from the Royal Liverpool hospital.
