Last week the interminable Palestinian national reconciliation negotiations failed yet again, amid mutual recriminations. There was also apparently a dispute about the prospect of Mr Abbas serving simultaneously as both president and prime minister.

Some observers contend that Israel’s recent elections provide such a turning point. The New York Times, for instance, argued in an editorial that the results set the stage for a breakthrough in moribund peace negotiations.

The ongoing siege of Gaza will prolong the conflict with Israel and lead the region to another round of violence, preventing a just and comprehensive peace agreement, Abbas said in a speech at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation summit in Cairo.
