Last week the interminable Palestinian national reconciliation negotiations failed yet again, amid mutual recriminations. There was also apparently a dispute about the prospect of Mr Abbas serving simultaneously as both president and prime minister.

Fatah leader President Mahmoud Abbas says elections will be the basis to end the division, but that Hamas opposes a vote "at this stage." Some observers contend that Israel’s recent elections provide such a turning point. The New York Times, for instance, argued in an editorial that the results set the stage for a breakthrough in moribund peace negotiations.
