HEBRON (Ma’an) – Palestinian Authority premier Salam Fayyad said Tuesday that Hebron's old city sets an "example for human civilization in all ages, and an ideal for steadfastness and defiance."

Residents reject seggregation, 'judaisation,' and siege, and it "is time its people enjoy freedom and independence,” Fayyad said while inaugurating an international conference on historic cities.

The conference is part of the celebrations of the 15th anniversary of the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee. It is held in association with Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron.

The PA governor of Hebron Kamil Hmeid attended the conference along with the minister of local governance Khalid Qawasmi, members of the PLO and Fatah leadership, and representatives of embassies.

Fayyad said the rehabilitation committee revived hope and life in the old city thanks to its efforts in refurbishing old homes, opening new institutions, and launching encouraging initiatives.

He highlighted that the PA supported the committee both directly and indirectly.

“Holding such a conference in the heart of Hebron not only protects its position in history, but also sends a message saying that it is time our Palestinian people got their freedom and resumed their role in building human civilization,” Fayyad said.

Achieving that, he added, is subordinate to the international community and the extent it is prepared to make Israel comply with international law and legitimacy which will secure ending occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to live in peace and dignity.
