Encountering Peace: Confessions of a ‘yefeh nefesh’
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post by Gershon Baskin - (Opinion) October 10, 2011 - 12:00am I admit it, I’m a yefeh nefesh or at least striving to be one, and I’m proud of it. That’s my confession from my Yom Kippur soul searching. An online dictionary definition of the term says: “(literary) sensitive, delicate, refined, noble, gentle soul; (critically) bleeding heart.” It’s the critical definition of “bleeding heart liberal” that is the accepted Israeli colloquial understanding and use of the term. One could easily add to this “leftist, radical leftist, Arab lover, self-hating Jew, post-Zionist and traitor.” |
Rabbis’ love for Israel: Is it a generational thing?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) by Dan Klein - (Analysis) October 4, 2011 - 12:00am Do Conservative rabbis become more politically conservative on Israel as they grow older, or are older rabbis simply more right wing than younger rabbis when it comes to Israel? A new study by the Conservative movement’s flagship institution presents some evidence of a generational gap among rabbis, finding that older ones tend to identify more closely with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, while younger ones also favorably view J Street, the more liberal “pro-Israel, pro-peace” lobbying group. |
Some lessons gleaned from living with the Palestinians
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Advertiser-Tribune by Paulette Schroeder - (Opinion) August 8, 2011 - 12:00am How strangely I'm ending my time in Palestine. Having lived three years in Hebron, Palestine, I find that I'm surprised but finally keen to what it really means to be a citizen of the United States. At the same time, I've come to appreciate more clearly what it means for me to be Christian in our world today. |

The poll, released Tuesday, found that the Muslim Americans exceeded Jewish belief in religious pluralism and in the fairness of elections, and also in support of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – 81 percent for Muslims, 78 percent for Jews. Jews and Muslims also were the only religious groups surveyed in which a majority backed President Obama. |
Beck and the Jews: Does he get them? Do they get him?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) by Ron Kampeas - (Opinion) July 26, 2011 - 12:00am It depends on whom you ask – to a degree – but it also seems to depend on the day of the week. Here he is on the night of July 19: “The Jewish people have been chased out of almost every country on this planet,” he told a crowd of thousands at the annual Christians United for Israel gathering in Washington. "This is why the nation of Israel is vital.” |
Jews Want Obama To Do More for Mideast Peace
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jewish Week by Douglas Bloomfield - (Analysis) July 24, 2011 - 12:00am Jews give President Obama a higher overall job approval than most other voters although they're still unhappy with his handling of the economy and don't think he's doing enough to broker Middle East peace. But that doesn't mean they're ready to vote for someone else next year, according to a survey of 800 Jews earlier this month for J Street. |
