RAMALLAH, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian prisoners in Israel went on a hunger strike on Thursday to urge for the release of their colleagues who have been held before Israel and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed their peace accords in 1993, a Palestinian official said.
Ziad Abu Ein, deputy minister of prisoners' affairs of the Palestinian National Authority, said that 4,600 prisoners in Israeli jails are on hunger strike for one day. Israel holds about 110 Palestinians since before the signing of Oslo peace accords.
Thursday's strike is a renewal of the general 28-day hunger strike that ended on May 14, when Egypt brokered a deal where Israel promised to improve the prison conditions and end the practice of administrative detention. But Palestinian officials accuse the Israeli Prison Service of breaking the agreement and continuing to crack down on prisoners.
Abu Ein added that the prisoners were also protesting "the abuse and raids in their rooms" by the Israeli Prison Service.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has repeatedly signaled that the release of prisoners who were detained by Israel before the agreement is a priority for continuing peace talks.
