Officials from the Islamist movement Hizb Ut-Tahrir (Liberation Party) in the West Bank accused the Palestinian Authority of carrying out politically-motivated arrests targeting members, a statement said Friday.
PA assertions that security forces do not target Islamist parties are untrue, the statement said, adding that claims of non-bias by the Fatah-run government "are falsified by the realities on the ground."
The party said "political arrests are carried out constantly by West Bank security departments across all regions," citing the recent arrest of Hizb Ut-Tahrir member Mohammad Al-Khatib on 8 October, with a release date for 30 October. According to the statement, Al-Khatib has not yet been released.
One month later, when a student group at Hebron Polytechnic organized a symposium about the reformation of an Islamic caliphate across the Middle East, the central principle behind the movement, at least ten young members of the group were detained
The event, titled "Wars on Resources," proceeded without issue, but when students left the campus of the school, a representative said, PA officers were waiting and took the young men to investigation centers.
