Two Palestinians killed on Sunday by IDF fire along the Gaza border were not engaged in terrorist activity but were standing next to a Palestinian who was pointing a loaded RPG at the Israeli military force, an investigation of the incident has revealed.
The incident took place Sunday evening when troops deployed along the security fence spotted a man pointing a loaded RPG in their direction. Earlier in the day, the IDF detected a number of people who had also approached the security fence in the area, and soldiers fired several warning shots.
The troops opened fire at the Palestinian with the RPG and killed him and two other people close to him. These two were later identified as 91-year-old Ibrahim Abu Said and his grandson Ismail Abu Odeh, 21.
According to the initial findings of the IDF Gaza Division’s probe into the incident, Abu Said and his grandson were not involved in terrorist activity and were mistakenly shot by IDF troops. The third Palestinian had apparently found the RPG in the field and lifted it up.
“This is not the type of result that we would like from such incidents,” an officer in the Gaza Division explained on Tuesday.
