A Hamas lawmaker on Wednesday hinted that an Israeli security breach to his Islamic movement was possible.
"When the movements become victims of security breach, they should announce this openly," said Mahmoud Al-Rumhi, a Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), based in the West Bank.
"The movements of resistance are always the subject of many attempted breaches through spies and Israel has facilities enabling it to try spying on the factions. It might had succeeded in some cases and failed in others," he told reporters.
Al-Rumhi's remarks came in comment to a report that a son of a Hamas co-founder in the West Bank had collaborated with Israel's intelligence for 10 years.
The Israeli daily Haaretz reported that Mosab Hassan Yousef, who has lived in the United States for years after converting to Christianity, had helped Israel's Shin Bet security agency in thwarting suicide bombings and attacks through his information that also led to arresting senior Hamas commanders there.
The report said that Mosab had also helped Israel to arrest his father, who is an influential West Bank Hamas leader, to protect him from being killed.
But for Al-Rumhi, Haaretz report was "an Israeli attempt to cut the road before Mosab if he wanted to return to Islam." Haaretz said that Mosab will release his diaries next week.
The report comes as speculations suggesting a security breach within Hamas mount following the death of a secretive Hamas commander in Dubai last month. Dubai police, which issued photos of 11 holders of European passports said to be the hit squad, stated that Mahmoud al-Mabhouh had been spotted and tracked before he arrived in Dubai, thanks to information from one of his close aides.
