ATFP Welcomes Presdential Speech on Palestine, Emphasizes Importance of Implementing Assistance

Washington, D.C., July 16 – The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP) today welcomed the speech by U.S. president George Bush in which he reiterated U.S. support for the establishment of a Palestinian state. Following his speech, President Bush and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas spoke by telephone in a half hour conversation about U.S. steps meant to strengthen Palestinian moderates and the prospects for Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Forty years ago this month, Israel stunned the Arab states in six days of war whose consequences are yet to be resolved. Hamas' version of its own six-day war has created new political realities that may be with us for some time to come. Washington, D.C., May 23 -- The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP) today deplored the passage of H.R. 4681, the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006, in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill was passed by a vote of 361 to 37, with 9 representatives answering "present." Opposition to the bill with its existing provisions included Arab, Palestinian, Jewish and Christian American groups, and the Bush administration.

Washington, D.C., May 10 -- The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP) and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars held a half-day conference today entitled "Politics and Diplomacy: Next Steps in Arab-Israeli Peacemaking." The conference featured two panels of Palestinian, Arab and Israeli former senior government officials in addition to a member of the Israeli media. The conference concluded with a keynote speech by H.R. H. Prince Turki al-Faisal, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United States.

The foundations of the historic compromise have been shaken in this cruelest month of April. The president of the United States, publicly and clearly, redefined the right of return to mean the return to the yet-to-be-born Palestine. He questioned the "sanctity" of the 1967 borders and sanctioned "reality on the ground" as a determining factor for the future of settlements and borders.
