Our Tahrir Square
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Doron Rosenblum - (Opinion) July 1, 2011 - 12:00am The trend of looking to imitate the Arab uprisings by finding "our" Tahrir Square met only partial success in the cottage cheese boycott and the celebrities filmed sitting in solitary confinement in support of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. Neither gesture involved blood, tears or even sweat. From the start, it was clear that this was not the real thing. Where was the spirit of revolt in the street? Where were the stormy emotions and the self-sacrifice? Where were the assaults on institutions, as part of the plan to destroy the regime down to its foundations? |

Zionists, relax, Israel is not on the brink of destruction
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Carlo Strenger - (Opinion) June 30, 2011 - 12:00am One of the best-known Yiddish expressions is ‘Gevalt, Yiddelech, Gevalt!', a phrase best translated as ‘catastrophe, Jews, catastrophe!’. I would suggest that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition officially be named the Gevalt! Government. Listening to the utterances of our ministers, you would come to the conclusion that the State of Israel is about to be erased and the Jewish people are in danger of immediate extinction. |

Bread and entertainment
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Ynetnews by Nahum Barnea - (Opinion) June 30, 2011 - 12:00am Rabbi Dov Lior should have been interrogated in connection with affairs that are much graver than the praise he lavished on a book of incitement based on Jewish Law verses: Acts carried out by the Jewish terror underground; the Rabin murder; the Goldstein massacre – all these crimes, and others, came from a milieu where Rabbi Lior was, and still is, the spiritual authority. |

Israel’s Soviet Political Party
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jewish Daily Forward by Liam Hoare - (Opinion) June 27, 2011 - 12:00am Yisrael Beiteinu is widely understood to be the party of Russian Jewry, that population of nearly one million Jews who arrived in Israel after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Twelve years since its founding, it has become the third largest party in the Knesset, on a radical anti-clerical and staunchly nationalist platform. |

Caring enough to engage
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Jeremy Benami - (Opinion) June 24, 2011 - 12:00am We live at a time when serious decisions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are under discussion, the resolution of which will have implications not just for the future of Israel but for Jews living all over the world. It's not surprising that these discussions are accompanied by deep tensions, as they raise questions of life and death, and about the success or failure of the State of Israel and the heart and the soul of the Jewish people. |

How to stop Israeli soccer racism
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jerusalem Post by Larry Derfner - (Opinion) June 23, 2011 - 12:00am Here’s a suggestion on how to stop racism at Israeli soccer games – the chanting of “death to the Arabs,” the hooting of monkey sounds at black players, all that stuff: Film it and show it to the world. |

Arab autocrats suit Israel perfectly
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Gulf News by Faisal Al Qasim - (Opinion) June 23, 2011 - 12:00am Never take Israeli criticism of Arab dictatorships seriously. It is just for media consumption. In actual fact Israel would hate to see Arab dictators go as they suit it best. That is why the Israeli, together with the Iranian and other Arab lobbies are working constantly hard these days behind the scenes to prop up endangered despotic Arab regimes. |

Change the coalition
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Yehuda Ben Meir - (Opinion) June 23, 2011 - 12:00am A book can be written about errors made by the Israeli left, about its exaggerated or extremist approaches, and its estrangement from reality. At first, the left's blunders really do not seem like anything anyone has to fret too much about. But the lamentable thing is that the left's stances and statements drive large sectors of the Israeli public away from moderate, balanced positions. |

Netanyahu must ditch his madly right-leaning coalition
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Aluf Benn - (Opinion) June 22, 2011 - 12:00am You may love or hate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but there is no arguing with his success. Since he returned to power, Israel has enjoyed security calm, economic growth and political stability of a sort not seen for the last generation. The people prefer Netanyahu's diplomatic standstill and security restraint to the policy of his predecessor, Ehud Olmert, which combined diplomatic daring with military adventurism. Israelis are in love with the status quo and do not want to be disturbed by peace initiatives or wars. Netanyahu's passivity suits them just fine. |

‘Who Is a Jew?’ Again?!
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The Jewish Daily Forward (Editorial) June 22, 2011 - 12:00am On the emotional, bedeviling issue of “Who is a Jew?” in Israel, there’s been a small but welcome move toward Jewish reconciliation and an infuriating roadblock put in the way of further progress. First, the good news, because that’s a precious commodity on this subject. After months and months of negotiations, the Ministry of the Interior agreed that the Jewish Agency for Israel will now take the lead role in verifying Orthodox conversions as they relate to granting automatic Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return. |
