Washington, DC, Mar 20 -- ATFP Advocacy Director Ghaith Al-Omari participated in a panel at the Center for American Progress along with Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Ilan Paz on March 20 entitled "Prospects for a Two-State Solution". Mr. Al-Omari focused on the need for the new US Administration to take the lead in pushing the peace process forward.

In particular, he stressed the need for parallel progress on permanent status negotiations along with improving the quality of life for the Palestinian population and continuing the work of the Palestinian Authority in developing the security sector and ensuring law and order. He emphasized the need for an immediate settlement freeze in order to preserve the viability of the two-state solution. Regarding the Gaza Strip, Mr. Al-Omari called for the depoliticization of the issue of humanitarian aid and for ensuring the civilian population is protected. He called for Palestinian national unity in accordance with internationally accepted terms, but expressed skepticism that such an arrangement is likely in the short term.
