A Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike for more than two months refused water on Wednesday in a new challenge, protesting the renewal of his administrative detention. The Palestinian Prisoners' Association said that Hassan Safadi went on a hunger strike on June 21 and was promised by Israeli authorities to be released by the end of his administrative detention term. However, this term has now been renewed for another six months, prompting him to refuse water.


Israeli rights groups ask court to stop razing of Bedouin villages

Several Israeli human rights organizations petitioned the High Court on Tuesday to prevent the demolition of five Bedouin villages. The petition is spearheaded by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and is aimed at averting the construction of agricultural settlements in the area of Mevo'ot Arad, in the Negev. These Jewish settlements, seven of them, will be built after the existing Bedouin villages, which are home to hundreds of families, are razed.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Two dozen prisoners in an Israeli detention facility in the occupied West Bank have launched a hunger strike against their living conditions, the Palestinian prisoners society said Thursday. The 25 detainees in the Etzion detention facility near Bethlehem started refusing food over two weeks ago, said Jaclyn Fararjeh, a lawyer for the prisoners rights group.

Israel is due to host the European Under-21 championship in 2013. PFA President Jibril Rajoub wrote to Uefa to express concern about three Palestinian players who are being held in Israel without charge. One of them, midfielder Mahmoud al-Sarsak, is on hunger strike. Mr Sarsak, 25, is one of a handful of Palestinian prisoners who have rejected a deal that ended a mass hunger strike on 14 May.

FIFA on Tuesday urgently called on the Israeli Football Association to raise the plight of detained hunger-striking soccer player Mahmoud al-Sarsak with Israeli authorities. Al-Sarsak has been on hunger strike for 86 days to demand his release. He has been imprisoned by Israel without charge or trial since July 2009. FIFA urged IFA to draw attention to al-Sarsak's situation "with the aim of ensuring the physical integrity of the concerned players as well as their right for due process," a report on its website said.

Congressional Democrats and Republicans are joining forces for the first time in more than a decade in an effort to secure Jonathan Pollard's release. A bipartisan letter is circulating in the U.S. House of Representatives soliciting signatures on a letter to President Obama asking him to commute Pollard's sentence to time served. The "Dear Colleague" letter is signed by veteran House members Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Christopher Smith (R-N.J.).
