Resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict would make the US troops less threatened and remove the arguments of movements
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Dar Al-Hayat by Raghida Dergham - (Interview) June 1, 2009 - 12:00am The Commander of the US Central Command, General David Petraeus, told Al-Hayat in an interview that resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is “very central” for his work as commander of US forces in 20 countries, mostly of them in the Muslim world, and that dealing with this conflict, just like closing Guantanamo, would be “a positive step forward” towards making the US troops less threatened. He said: “I think a lot of things would be better if this issue is resolved. |

What’s important is that we resist… T.V. will take care of the rest!
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Al-Ayyam by Hassan Khader - April 14, 2009 - 12:00am When someone challenges you by throwing down the gauntlet, it is an invitation to confrontation and conflict. And that’s exactly what Hezbollah’s Chairman did when he publicly acknowledged, on live television, the involvement of members of his organization in the arms smuggling network operating between Egypt and Gaza. Why didn’t Hezbollah ignore the Egyptian accusations and deny any connection with the accused individuals? Why this bold honesty and transparency in threatening the authority of the Egyptian state and its territorial integrity? |

The New Contenders
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Asharq Alawsat by Tariq Alhomayed - (Opinion) March 9, 2009 - 12:00am The first comment we heard from Hezbollah with regards to its opening of channels of communication with the British Foreign Office is that this is "a step in the right direction." However Westminster has said that this step is nothing more than floating a trial balloon, yet Hezbollah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qasim welcomed the new language! |

The false promise of radicalism has again reared its ugly head
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The National by Emile Hokayem - (Opinion) January 28, 2009 - 1:00am A dark spectre hovers over the Arab world: the cult of muqawama – resistance – and false promise of radicalism. Indeed, with every appalling Israeli bombing campaign comes a quixotic victory for Hamas and Hizbollah that leaves their societies in tatters but strengthens the sentiment elsewhere that complete victory over Israel is within reach, if only Arab governments could step aside and let the muqaweemen carry out their glorious mission. |

Why Israel Can’t Make Peace With Hamas
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from The New York Times by Jeffrey Goldberg - (Opinion) January 13, 2009 - 1:00am IN the summer of 2006, at a moment when Hezbollah rockets were falling virtually without pause on northern Israel, Nizar Rayyan, husband of four, father of 12, scholar of Islam and unblushing executioner, confessed to me one of his frustrations. We were meeting in a concrete mosque in the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza. Mr. Rayyan, who was a member of the Hamas ruling elite, and an important recruiter of suicide bombers until Israel killed him two weeks ago (along with several of his wives and children), arrived late to our meeting from parts unknown. |

At least two Lebanon rockets hit north Israel; Hezbollah denies involvment
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Jack Khoury - January 8, 2009 - 1:00am At least two Katyusha rockets fired from south Lebanon exploded in northern Israel on Thursday morning, leaving two people lightly wounded and a number of others suffering from shock. The rockets struck the Nahariya area at around 8 A.M., one of them scoring a direct hit on the roof a nursing home in the city. A Hezbollah minister in Lebanon's Cabinet has denied any involvement by the militant group in the firing of the rockets. In 2006, Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon fired almost 4000 rockets at Israel during the Second Lebanon War. |

Hezbollah…. Is this your Vision for Gaza?
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Asharq Alawsat by Tariq Alhomayed - (Opinion) January 5, 2009 - 1:00am One can only feel sadness with regards to what is happening in the Gaza Strip, which can only be described as a brutal and ruthless Israeli attack in the face of clear international inability to call a halt to this continued aggression on almost 1.5 million Gazans. |

Two Years Later: Two Wars and One Ideology
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Dar Al-Hayat by Elias Harfoush - (Opinion) January 5, 2009 - 1:00am The confrontation between the Israeli army and the Hamas movement following the ground invasion of Gaza is similar in many aspects to the confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah in summer 2006. |

Delusions of victory in Gaza
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz by Zvi Barel - December 28, 2008 - 1:00am As of yesterday, politicians and the public at large have been enthralled by a new prospect: that of a wide-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip. Such a prospect answers all their heart's secret wishes: Avenging the rocket fire by Gazan militants, reclaiming Israel's prestige, delivering a fatal blow to Hamas, providing payback for Israel's 2005 pullout from Gaza, sending a strong message to Iran, an implicit one to Hezbollah, and also showing the government's concern for its citizens and scoring some points with the electorate ahead of the elections. |

Nasrallah: No peace in Middle East as long as Israel exists
ATFP World Press Roundup Article from Haaretz September 10, 2008 - 8:00pm Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah said in a recent interview that as long as Israel exists, there will be no peace in the Middle East. "The region will not see the light of peace or any stability because of Israel's aggressiveness and militant nature," Nasrallah said. Despite hiding out in a bunker since 2006's Second Lebanon War, Nasrallah recently spoke to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting radio station, Army Radio reported. |
