BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestinian security services have detained suspects believed to be behind Wednesday's deadly shooting of a top security commander in Jenin, a security spokesman says.

"There are some suspects who were detained for investigation, and there are security organizations working with us in the investigation process," Adnan al-Dmeiri said Thursday.

Hisham al-Rakh was shot several times Wednesday by unidentified gunmen while driving in a mountainous area near the Jenin refugee camp, in the second high-profile murder of the year in the area.

"The security forces will end this chaos in Jenin soon," al-Dmeiri told Ma'an, but he declined to go into detail about the number of detainees, citing a policy not to comment on an ongoing investigation.

In early May, gunmen opened fire on the home of late governor Qaddura Musa, leading to a heart attack that killed him while in pursuit of the suspected gunmen.

The Palestinian Authority launched a large-scale security crackdown in the district in response.

Jenin governor Talal Dweikat said precautions were being put in place to prevent future incidents.
