Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday announced that the Arab League will decide on September 6, the date for applying to the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state.

A well-informed source quoted Abbas during a meeting of the advisory council of his Fatah Party held in Ramallah as saying that the options for the Palestinians, amid a stalemate peace process, "are limited."

The source, who spoke in condition of anonymity, told Xinhua that Abbas said if Israel keeps rejecting to halt settlement building and rejects to be committed to the two-state solution, the Palestinians will be obliged to go to the UN General Assembly for recognition of a non-member state.

The source said that the date for applying to the UN and make the request will be decided on Sept. 6 by the Arab League foreign ministers. Abbas also revealed that the Palestinians launched an active diplomatic campaign to gain enough international support for the recognition.

On Sunday, the Arab League Committee, which met in Qatar, expressed its full support to the Palestinian bid for UN recognition as an alternative to the ongoing stalemate in the peace process of the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Abbas rejected demands and pressures on him to hold a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for some facilities and privileges.

Abbas had said, according to the source, that Netanyahu offered to release 50 Palestinian prisoners from Israel and hand the Palestinian security 300 machine-guns for holding a meeting with Abbas.

"Abbas insisted that halting settlement activity and accepting the two-state solution by the Israeli government will revive the direct peace negotiations between the two sides," said the source.
